Universities paid at least $1.16 million in settlements

Since 2011, Iowa's state universities have paid at least $1.16 million in secret settlements to employees and students. The schools spent an additional $1.17 million in settlements that didn't include confidentiality clauses but are not believed to have been made public at an open meeting of any government body.

Human trafficking happens at home

In the first segment of a six-part series, the Iowa State Daily spoke with an Iowa victim of human trafficking who was taken from Cedar Rapids when she was 14 years old. Researchers say homeless and runaway youth are the most vulnerable to trafficking. In 2011, there were an estimated 3,800 homeless and runaway youth in Iowa.
